Seven years after fatal fire, Bangladesh still provides no financial security to garment workers injured on the job

Seven years since at least 112 workers were killed and many more injured in a fire in the Tazreen Fashions factory in Bangladesh, there is still no system in place offering financial security to workers injured at the workplace and families of workers killed on the job. If a worker loses their health or life on the job, they or their families will face the same insecurity and struggle for compensation as the Tazreen families did seven years ago. Years of planning to create a nation-wide employment injury insurance scheme have still not led to tangible results.

Reality check for the Bangladesh garment industry: what needs to be addressed?

Employers, multi-stakeholder initiatives, and academics will be discussing the Bangladesh apparel industry in the European Parliament today. All stakeholders in the industry will have a chance to speak, except for the workers who form the backbone of the industry. Requests to have a worker representative as one of the speakers on today’s panel have been turned down. Clean Clothes Campaign believes a reality check on the situation of the garment industry in Bangladesh is direly needed, and would like to highlight issues that might be left out in absence of worker voices.

Seven years ago today at least 1,134 workers died in the garment industry’s deadliest factory incident in history. Today, we remember the workers who died in the Rana Plaza collapse, sending our thoughts to those affected by this tragedy. While we commemorate this crisis, workers’ lives are again at risk.

Commemorating the Rana Plaza anniversary by preventing the next disaster

24 April marks eight years since the Rana Plaza building collapsed with thousands of people inside, killing at least 1,134 people. In the face of a new lockdown in Bangladesh we are offering an online commemoration platform, to safely mark this anniversary. Additionally the website enables visitors to urge garment brands to continue preventing future disasters. This is vital as the Bangladesh Accord, the programme that has successfully made factories safer since Rana Plaza, is at risk of being rendered meaningless within the next five weeks.

Statement on the 11th Tazreen Fashions fire anniversary

Eleven years have passed since the Tazreen Fashions factory fire on 24 November 2012. On this day we remember and pledge not to forget about the negligence that let to this preventable disaster. We will continue to advocate for safer workplaces throughout garment supply chains, as well as for legally enshrined financial compensation for all injured and killed workers in garment factories Bangladesh.
