Bangladeshi garment workers face mass firings and criminal charges

Since last month's wage protests began in Dhaka, Bangladesh thousands of workers along with several grass-roots worker organizations located in the region faced a series of repressive actions from their employers and the government. An estimated 2 - 3000 workers were fired, while numerous legal cases filed at the Ashulia police station accuse at least 1,500 unnamed workers and 150 named workers of vandalism, looting, threatening other workers, and assaulting factory officials. At least 13 union leaders and activists, many of whom had no association with the protests, were detained or arrested. As of January 4, 2017, at least 11 remain in police custody.

C&A ignores union busting at its supplier factory in Myanmar

Two years ago this week, a Myanmar garment factory started a union-busting campaign against a newly formed union, leading to the dismissal and forced resignation of the union’s leadership. All that time, the factory’s major buyer – garment brand C&A – stood by and watched. Despite repeated requests, C&A has failed to address the situation and bring justice for the workers.

A union rights win for Next workers in Sri Lanka!

After months of fighting for Next to formally recognise the Free Trade Zones & General Services Employees Unions branch union within the Next Manufacturing Ltd (NML) factory, workers from the NML factory in Sri Lanka have finally secured victory. We celebrate with all the workers who have fought for their right to join a union and refused to give up in face of a reluctant management.
