Victory: Company drops legal case against Romanian journalist reporting on dire working conditions

An international campaign convinced the Italian-owned factory Maglierie Cristian Impex in Romania to drop the trial against a Romanian investigative journalist for reporting on dire working conditions in one of the largest producers of garments in Romania. The factory employs around 900 people and produces for luxury brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Marco Polo and LaCoste, but also for high street fashion brands such as Zara and Bershka.

Victory for workers in the Philippines after three months on the picket line

Former workers of the Faremo International factory in the Philippines reached an agreement about financial compensation in February, after more than three months of continuous picketing. The workers were protesting the closure of their factory that seemed primarily aimed at curtailing the recently established factory union. Bolstered by international solidarity the dismissed workers stuck together and reached a campaign victory.

A year later these workers, largely women, are still fighting for justice and are in a desperate situation. As they stitched clothes for UK brands Marks and Spencer and Bonmarché, as well as Canadian brand Nygård, the workers are demanding that these companies take responsibility and give them the legally due payments that their supplier failed to provide.

A group of workers in Romania received their full back wages after an intense media campaign went viral. During the first months of the pandemic, they received 140 EUR, just over half of their regular monthly wage. Tesco and Starbucks take action in exploited Burmese migrant garment worker case, but where are Disney and NBC Universal?

26 Burmese migrant garment workers are legally-owed 3.46 million Thai baht (approx. $110,000) in compensation for the exploitation they suffered while making products for Disney, NBC Universal, Starbucks, and Tesco. They received only 1 million baht from the factory owner. Tesco has taken action and paid more than a quarter of the outstanding amount owed to the workers and Starbucks has committed to paying. Disney and NBC Universal have yet to pay up to ensure these workers receive all the money owed to them.
